The SPX Anthology used to be published annually by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) to coincide with the Bethesda, MD Small Press Expo (SPX). In 2003, its ninth year, SPX served as the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent from September 5-7.
As with every year, all profits from SPX and the SPX Anthology went to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.
The 2002 SPX Anthology won an Eisner Award ( the comic book industry's Oscars) for "Best Anthology." This SPX Anthology boasts 300 pages of travel-themed stories ranging from the humorous to the heart-rending by 48 emerging and established cartoonists.
The anthology is wrapped by a front cover drawn by master cartoonist Jaime Hernandez. Published by Fantagraphics Books, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez’s Love & Rockets series is the alternative comics success story of the last three decades.
The book’s back cover image is painted by Joel Priddy. Priddy’s Pulpatoon Pilgrimage debuted in 2002 from AdHouse Books as one of the breakout literary graphic novels of the year and was nominated for a 2003 Eisner Award.
